IPL is one of the newest treatments for sun damaged skin.  Known as photodynamic therapy, it is ideal for the treatment of both the red and the brown discoloration that comes with aging and sun exposure.  IPL also helps shrink pores, reduce fine lines and increase collagen. 

The face, neck, chest, shoulders and hands are most commonly treated.  Brown spots darken and flake off in 1 - 3 weeks.  Redness disappears.  Side effects are usually minimal, but may include swelling, redness and bruising.  Generally 2 - 5 treatments are required for best results.

IPL may be combined with a medicine called Levulan for increased effectiveness.  This also has the added benefit of helping acne and pre-cancerous lesions.  Levulan can heighten the effects of the IPL treatment alone, making fewer treatments necessary.
